Here are the basic parameters of our story:
The story is based in the tropical, seaside community of Sawgrass, Florida. The community survuves on tourism, commercial fishing, and luxury boat building.
Our character s come from two fueding families:
The blue collar McKarens who have struggled with up and downs of the fishing industry. The family has lived in Sawgrass for more than 100 years, and occupies a home built shortly after the Civil War. They are a family of tough, strong, proud men and women. The McKarens have had their brushes with the law. The McKarens have a strong sense of family, but squabble about use of the family's limited resources, strained business dealings among the family, unrelenting financial issues, and general difference between people in the family.
The white collar Valdezes are second generation American having arrived in Florida as part of the Marielle boat exodus from Cuba. The elder Valdezes remain in Cuba, and do have considerable wealth based on sugar cane and tobacco farming. There is a culture gap and difference of perspective between the American clan and those who remain in Cuba. The American clan made its considerable wealth in just 2 generations by building exceptionally fast power boats commissioned by both the US Marshalls and high-end drug dealers. They are equally hard-working family of educated and smart people. The Valdezes are equally tight knit, but have spats based on the distribution of the family's wealth among its members, cultural expectations generated by living under the influence of two cultures, and based on the moral delimna of selling building boats to run drugs and building boats to capture those same drug dealers.
